"Viper" Rapier by Bellatore
HEMA rapier with a swept hilt guard inspired by the teachings of the Antwerp master Gérard Thibault and his "Academy of the Sword" (1628). Lacking a knuckle bow, it is distinguished by a characteristic cross on the back of the guard and hand-forged viper decorations connecting the outer rings. Its handle and pommel, longer than those of other schools of Verdadera Destreza, incorporate the unique features of the Thibault method.
- Swept hilt guard without knuckle bow, cross on the back, and hand-forged vipers
- Elongated handle and pommel, in line with Thibault's method
- Weight shifted towards the hand for a stable point and precise control of the blade
- Blade model of 104cm
Description
Gérard Thibault d'Anvers holds a unique place in 17th-century fencing: his posthumous treatise "Académie de l'Épée" (1628) develops a method based on measurement, the mysterious circle, and a highly geometric interpretation of rapier combat, distinct from other schools of Verdadera Destreza of his time.
This "Viper" follows the instructions of the Antwerp master for its guard: a swept hilt mount without a knuckle bow, recognizable by its characteristic cross on the reverse and its hand-forged vipers connecting the outer rings.
The handle and pommel are intentionally longer than those of other Destreza schools, bringing the weight closer to the fencer's hand: with a balance point about 13 cm in front of the guard, the tip remains stable for the measurement and engagement actions specific to the Thibaultian method.
As with any richly crafted openwork guard, regular checks of the vipers' maintenance and the tightening of the pommel are recommended after practice sessions.
