Bucklers

The buckler, a small circular shield emblematic of the Middle Ages, holds a central place in the study of European close combat techniques. This compact shield, 15 to 45 cm in diameter, was the perfect ally of the sword, offering targeted protection and exceptional maneuverability in hand-to-hand combat.

The importance of the buckler in medieval martial arts is notably highlighted by the famous I.33 treatise, the oldest known European fencing manual. This 13th-century document illustrates in detail the combat techniques combining sword and buckler, testifying to the sophistication and effectiveness of this weapon combination.

In the context of HEMA, the buckler is an indispensable study tool. Our selection offers faithful replicas, designed for authentic and safe training. These bucklers allow you to explore the historical techniques described in the I.33 and other sources, offering an immersive experience in the art of medieval combat.

We also offer other round shields like the rondache, thus offering a wider range for the study of historical combat techniques.
