Buckler
This shield, circular in shape and often adorned with a central boss, served both for defense and attack. It was commonly used by infantrymen, archers, and even knights when they were on foot. Its lightweight design and manageable size made it an ideal tool to quickly parry and repel an opponent.
Among the sources that have come down to us, the I.33 treatise, often recognized as the oldest known fencing manual, holds a special place. Originating from the 13th century, this precious manuscript details the art of combat with sword and buckler. Thanks to meticulous illustrations and written instructions, the I.33 provides a window into the techniques and strategies taught to the fighters of that era.
