Wukusi Gothic Sallet - Removable Visor

The Wukusi Gothic Sallet is a hybrid HEMA helmet: a full fencing mask enclosed within a rigid plastic shell styled after the late-medieval sallet, fitted with an articulated visor that can be raised or fully removed. Built for harnischfechten and synthetic armour combat, it lets the wearer switch between restricted vision (visor down) and open vision (visor up or off).

  • Rigid sallet-style shell + rear tail + articulated visor, both raisable and removable
  • Integrated fencing mask, FIE 2018 three-point rear strap closure, black mesh
  • Two configurations in one helmet: immersive with the visor closed, more open with it removed
  • Built for harnischfechten, synthetic armour work, and restricted-vision drilling — pair with a certified mask for sparring or competition

Description

The sallet was one of the defining helmets of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, worn by men-at-arms in both tournament and battlefield contexts. Its swept, rounded shape and rear tail — often paired with an articulated bevor covering the lower face — made it a mainstay of European plate armour. Wukusi carries that silhouette faithfully into a helmet built for actual practice: underneath the rigid plastic shell sits a complete fencing mask, and the sallet shape isn't purely decorative — it structures the whole head protection system, down to the rear tail that covers the occipital area.

The articulated visor is the centrepiece of the design. Lowered, it covers the mesh and imposes deliberately restricted vision, close to what a fighter in closed armour would experience — a genuine training exercise for harnischfechten practitioners looking to drill under perception conditions closer to historical arms and armour. Raised, it opens the field of view back up for phases where full visual contact matters. On this version, it goes a step further: the visor detaches completely, letting you switch back to an open mask-and-shell configuration for a more conventional session, without swapping helmets.

The inner mask is built to work as part of this assembly and isn't intended for standalone use. On the safety side, the manufacturer states the bib and mesh are equivalent to EN 13567 Level 1 (350N), with no official classification for the complete assembly once modified — worth knowing before considering it as a sole competition helmet. The rear closure follows the FIE 2018 three-strap standard.

The Gothic Sallet finds its real place in synthetic armour kits, harnischfechten, and technical drills where deliberately restricted vision is part of the training — as a complement to, not a replacement for, a certified Level 2/1600N mask for hard sparring and competition.

Important information and terms of use

In the absence of a harmonized European standard specific to HEMA, this material does not benefit from the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) certification of the FIE-CE type.

The "350N" and "800N" ratings designate the fabric's puncture resistance measured in a laboratory. They do not constitute a guarantee against impacts and do not measure shock absorption, as the case may be.

The use of this equipment, particularly for the practice of HEMA, is under the sole responsibility of the user. It is recommended that the user adapt and complete their equipment according to the simulators used (steel, synthetic, wood), the intensity of their practice, and the regulatory requirements of their club or tournament.
