Description
The medieval Gaelic warriors of Ireland and Scotland were described as "great despisers of death" by the English writer Edmund Spenser. This military society included aristocratic horsemen (Ridir), the formidable galloglass and redshank mercenaries armed with axes and two-handed swords (Buannacht), and the guerrilla fighters known as kerns or caterans (Ceatharn).
Created by a team of researchers from the Cateran Society, this pioneering work explores Gaelic weapons and combat techniques between 1300 and 1600. In the absence of period technical manuals, the authors have developed a training method based on the best available historical evidence: Gaelic sword (claidheamh), sword and buckler, two-handed sword, war axes (Scottish Lochaber and Irish sparth), as well as bow, spear, and dirk.
Each weapon system benefits from progressive instructions structured into ten lessons, covering guards, footwork, strikes, parries, and combinations. An essential resource for reenactors, HEMA practitioners interested in Scottish or Irish history, and anyone wishing to explore this little-known martial tradition.
About the Authors:
A team of researchers from the Cateran Society including Christopher Scott Thompson (founder, author of several works on the Highland broadsword), Heiko Große (President, founder of the Broadsword Academy Germany), Ken Pfrenger (founder of Cumann Bhata and NEOHEMAS), and Randal Gustitis (Level II Mentor, Broadsword Academy Pennsylvania).
