Description

The Scottish basket-hilted broadsword and the British singlestick form a coherent educational pair: the singlestick, a straight wooden stick, historically served as a training tool for the broadsword, allowing safe practice of cutting strikes, line play, and the opposition characteristic of the British military saber. This approach differs from the French combat cane, which is more oriented towards urban self-defense, with the singlestick remaining faithful to the principles of the war saber.

Keith Farrell contextualizes these disciplines within Scottish society of the 17th-19th centuries: Jacobite uprisings, Highland charges, martial tradition. The work traces the evolution of the broadsword (from the claymore to the weapons of Roworth and Angelo) and the history of the singlestick in Great Britain, from the earliest accounts of the 18th century to modern revivals, including the 1904 Olympic Games.

The educational core fully reproduces "The Art of Defence on Foot" (1804) and structures the learning: strikes, posture, footwork, line and opposition, slip work, with Taylor's 10 lessons commented. A complete guide for self-learning or as a supplement to club instruction.
