Description

In 1798, Charles Roworth published The Art of Defence on Foot with the Broadsword and Saber, unifying the Scottish and Austrian methods into a regular system. Although not a master-at-arms himself, Roworth offers an accessible and methodical system for learning the saber and broadsword. His clear instructions assume no prior knowledge, making the work particularly suitable for beginners, while providing experienced practitioners with in-depth technical explanations and justifications.

This facsimile was created from the original treatise held by the Academy of Historical Arts in Glasgow. Each page has been carefully photographed and edited to provide a faithful reproduction of the highest quality. The edition includes a biography of Charles Roworth by Keith Farrell, as well as a brief essay by Ben Kerr on the "Long-S" character present in the original printed text.

The treatise is structured in two parts: practice at the target and then with an opponent, followed by the application of the point and an appendix. A valuable historical resource for understanding British saber systems at the turn of the 19th century.
