The Danzig "Black Fencer" Messer is a faithful reproduction of the 15th century Langes Messer, inspired by the techniques described in the Codex Danzig, a manuscript belonging to the tradition of Johannes Liechtenauer and gathering texts from different authors, including Peter von Danzig.
The Langes Messer, or "long knife" in German, was a popular weapon in the 15th century in Central Europe. The name "Danzig" refers to Peter von Danzig, the presumed author of mid-15th century combat books, the teachings of which are preserved in the Codex Danzig (Codex 44 A 8) of 1452. This manuscript, belonging to the tradition of Johannes Liechtenauer, is a valuable source for the study of Messer combat techniques. The Danzig Messer "Black Fencer" thus offers HEMA practitioners a faithful reproduction for the study and practice of the specific techniques described in these historical texts.
This Danzig Messer simulator is the result of a collaboration between Black Fencer and HEMA experts, based on the descriptions and illustrations of the Codex Danzig. The blade, made of a high-density nylon alloy, has low flexibility that faithfully reproduces the characteristics of a historical steel Messer. This controlled rigidity allows for realistic work of the cutting and thrusting techniques described by Peter von Danzig and his contemporaries. The stainless steel guard and pommel not only provide an authentic aesthetic aspect, but also a realistic balance and weight.
The low flexibility of the blade allows for precise work of cutting, parrying, and binding techniques specific to the Messer, as described in the Codex Danzig. The balance point, located about 8.5 cm from the guard, offers exceptional maneuverability while retaining the mass dynamics characteristic of the historical weapon. Weighing 800 g, this simulator offers sensations very close to a steel Messer, while allowing for intensive training with minimal protective equipment.
