How to clean your leather fencing gloves without damaging them?
Maintenance of Leather Fencing Gloves: Practical Tips
Fencing gloves are an essential part of protective equipment. Along with the mask, they are the most used accessories and therefore those that also wear out the fastest.
This article concerns all types of leather fencing gloves, whether they are Kevlar glove models, classic leather fencing gloves, or Mac Armour fencing gloves.
Taking care of your gloves is crucial not only to extend their lifespan, but also to avoid odor or moisture issues that can make your practice unpleasant. Here are some practical tips to keep your gloves in good condition.
The washing machine: a misleading good idea
It can be tempting to simply put your gloves in the washing machine, even at a low temperature, but unfortunately, this is a mistake you should definitely avoid.
Why Water and Leather Don't Mix Well:
- Loss of natural oils Leather contains natural oils that give it its flexibility. Water, especially with detergent, dissolves these essential oils. The result? Dry leather that becomes stiff and brittle.
- Modification of the structure Leather is a material that, once wet and then dried, shrinks and deforms. Imagine a glove that no longer fits your hand !
- Weakening of the fibers : Excessive moisture weakens the leather fibers, causing cracks to appear as soon as you bend the glove.
- Environment conducive to mold : Contrary to popular belief, machine washing does not sanitize leather but creates an ideal environment for mold. Water seeps deeply into the leather and remains trapped, creating a humid environment perfect for the growth of bacteria and fungi.
A glove that has been machine washed becomes not only uncomfortable and less effective, but can also develop odor and mold issues that are much worse than before washing.
The secret to a healthy glove: airing it out after each training session
To prevent the development of moisture and mold, which are obviously accompanied by unpleasant odors, the best technique is to thoroughly air out your gloves after each training session.
Why it's essential:
- Sweat naturally evaporates instead of being trapped in the fabric.
- The leather and lining can breathe and dry completely.
- The bacteria responsible for bad odors do not have time to develop.
- The leather retains its suppleness and original shape.
How to proceed:
- At the end of your session, take your gloves out of your fencing bag.
- Place them in a dry and well-ventilated area (avoid direct sunlight and radiators)
- Ideally, place them on a stand that allows air to circulate inside as well.
- Let them dry completely before storing them.
This simple gesture, repeated after each training session, can significantly extend the lifespan of your gloves.
Use a deodorizer to complete the maintenance
You can also use a specific deodorizer for gloves, such as the Anti-Bacterial No Stink deodorizer, which is very popular among combat sports athletes.
No Stink Deodorizer: An Effective Solution
What could be more unpleasant than putting on gloves that smell of mold and sweat? To put an end to this problem, the No Stink antibacterial deodorizer uses non-toxic and eco-friendly agents.
Its main component, natural bamboo charcoal, effectively absorbs moisture, which limits the growth of bacteria responsible for bad odors. Although initially designed for boxing gloves, it is perfectly suited for fencing gloves.
Features and Usage:
- Composition: non-toxic and eco-friendly bamboo charcoal
- Action: anti-bacterial and moisture-wicking
- Sold as a pair
- Instructions for use: simply place the sachets in your gloves and let them work overnight.
An additional advantage is its versatility: you can also use it in your fencing shoes or sports bag to combat moisture in all your equipment.
Alternative home:
- Mix one part white vinegar with three parts water in a spray bottle.
- Lightly spray the inside of your gloves after drying
- The smell of vinegar disappears once dry, but the antibacterial properties remain.
If your gloves really need a wash
If despite these precautions, your gloves require a deeper cleaning, here is how to proceed without damaging them:
For the inside of the glove:
- Prepare a light solution of warm water with a few drops of mild soap (Marseille soap or very diluted dish soap).
- Lightly dampen a clean cloth with this solution (the cloth should be barely damp, not soaked).
- Gently wipe the inside of the glove
- With a new cloth slightly dampened with clear water, wipe to remove soap residue.
- Allow to air dry completely, ideally by inserting unprinted newspaper to absorb moisture.
For the leather exterior:
- Use a soft cloth slightly dampened with very mild soapy water.
- Gently rub the stained areas in circular motions
- Wipe with a clean, dry cloth
- Once the leather is completely dry, apply a small amount of leather balm to restore the natural oils.
Important: Regardless of the method used, ensure that the gloves dry completely before using them again. Incomplete drying is the main cause of odor development and premature degradation.
Conclusion
Taking care of your fencing gloves doesn't require much effort, but it does require some regularity. By airing them out after each use, occasionally using a deodorizer, and absolutely avoiding the washing machine, you will maintain a comfortable and hygienic piece of equipment for a longer time. These few minutes dedicated to the maintenance of your gloves will not only save you money in the long run but also ensure better comfort during your fencing practice.
